Spring sprang around here on the official day with six inches of snow. Everyone was in short sleeves Friday at 70 degrees, then came Saturday and the official day of spring. Mother nature has a weird sense of humor this year.
We lost a few more calves mostly due to mother nature and the timing of calving. Such is how it goes. Hate to lose any but seems we can't ever have a 100 percent calf crop running three hundred head.
Semen checked spring bulls for sale at the beginning of the month, got yearling weights on heifers and bulls. Spent a lot of time in the bull pen showing bulls and got over half sold. So not too bad a month in that regard seeing how many bulls were offered for sale this month. When we have nice weather days all the babies are playing and kicking up their heels. Sure am ready for the nicer weather to hit. We missed burning on the one nice day that had no wind. Neighbors got some pasture burned just before the snow. Will watch to see if I am jealous or not as doesn't look like we will get any done this year.
Ultrasounded the last full week of the month, got good results and some of the calves numbers will change in June when they update epds. Chad Gordon is a nice fella and he does our ultrasound, he travels around quite a bit, so is interesting to get to catch up. Took two bulls to the OBI sale on March 25th and did alright with them. They sure looked the part.
We ran horses in the Oklahoma Futurity early in the month and came in with the eleventh fasted time, which of course isn't fast enough, no matter what the time or how close. Kinda like coming in second in a race. Oh well, there is always next month.
See ya next month.
CWow I really have no idea where the month went. Seemed like it just started and now is done. weather was decent for the month of April. Didn't get as much moisture as they were predicting. But all in all is really hard to complain as the sun was shining mostly and glory be the grass id growing. Like most folks, wondered for awhile when it would start.
This past winter was a little rough around here being so wet. We got lucky or fortunate and didn't run out of hay. But I have to tell you I was starting to wonder. If we had a few more weeks of the bad weather, even one actually , we would of run out.
Finished pregnancy checking and got pretty good results 80 to 85% ai'd so was pleased with that. Ed and Robbie do a really good job with the girls. We finished all the herd brucellosis testing at the same time, so we get our monies worth from the vet's visit. Although I do schedule it over a few days, so as not wear him out. Also gives me a little more time to get a little better look at the girls as we do our spring work at the same time.
We also weaned this month 114 calves. A few more bulls than heifers this go round. But by the time I get done making my cuts and selections it will even back out some. The CR Envoy calves are looking really good and averaged 573 pounds at 6 months. The other three sire groups averaged 536 pounds. So we are all real happy with the Envoy calves.
Worked the calves two weeks before weaning and gave the second shots at weaning and got all weights, heights, etc. Then started working momma's in between. Seems to keep us busy anyway.
Well in the finals of the Remington Park Futurity. Got lucky or good not sure which and had two in the finals. Didn't get a break that night and finished back in the pack. Oh well that is horse racing. Sure is alot more fun when you are winning.
Next chance is in May and have a few running in the Heritage Place trials so we will see, then is always a lot of good competition.
We started to set up heifers for breeding at the end of the month, hoping weather cooperates and things go smoothly. Also set up the the last of the donors that I'm gonna set up this spring. Hoping for good results there. Then of course main breeding season starts.
Hope you had as good a month and will hope for some more exciting news around here than just the same. Although I might worry if something too exciting happens, as it always means something fell apart.
